Defense Odessa - defense operation of the army (5th September - 16th June 1941) Surrounded by the Primorsky Army (Lieutenant General G. P. Sofronov, from 5th September - Major General I. E. Petrov)), by forces and in-house of the Odessa military-naval base (Rear Admiral G.V. Zhukov) and the Black Sea Fleet (Vice Admiral F.S. Oktyabrsky) during the Second World War, which took place in the morning of Odessa against the German-Romanian armies. Many Jews took an active part in the defense, one of the leaders was Naum Gurevich. Jews took part in the fight against the Odessa rebel movement and became a significant part of the fighters in the partisan camps, which were based in the Odessa catacombs during the occupation.
By Decree of the Presidium of the Supreme Soviet of the USSR On the 22nd of 1942 the medal “For the Defense of Odessa” was founded. It was celebrated by all participants in the defense of Odessa - the military services of the Red Army, the Military-Navy Fleet and the military NKVS, as well as individuals from the civilian population who took a direct part in the defense of the place in period from 5 September to 16 April 1941.
